Blue-green algae is used as a biofertilizer. A biofertilizer is a substance which contains living micro-organisms which, when applied to seeds, plant surfaces, or soil, colonize the rhizosphere or the interior of the plant and promotes growth by increasing the supply or availability of primary nutrients to the host plant. [1] Blue green algae (BGA or cyanobacteria) like Nostoc and Anabaena are free living photosynthetic organisms also capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen. In the flooded rice fields blue green algae serves as a nitrogen biofertilizer. Q. Consider the following organisms. Agaricus; Nostoc; Spirogyra; Which of the above is/are used as biofertilizer
Blue-green algae represent a self-supporting system capable of carrying out both photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, the energy bill for the latter process being paid by the sun. Rice is perhaps the only major cereal crop to whose nitrogen economy the nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae make a significant contribution.
Algal biofertilizer as potential carbon dioxide sequesters towards improving agricultural crops yields. Carbon dioxide is green house gas and predominant environmental indicator of global warming and pollution ( Li et al., 2019 ). China and USA is the most predominant national which produces carbon dioxide.
Free living blue-green algae in rice fields can provide 10-20 kg N/ha, while azolla, a fern, in association with blue-green algae, can supply 30-40 kg N/ha. However, these biofertilizers alone cannot meet the N requirement of crops and their use has to be integrated with fertilizer N to get a good yield. Role in Solubilizing Phosphorous
Biofertilizer Biofertilizers are the substances of biological origin (microorganisms), which when added to the soil enhances its fertility and promotes plant growth. Broadly, biofertilizer constitutes of living organisms which include mycorrhizal fungi, blue-green algae, and bacteria.
Blue-green algae are photoautotrophic, prokaryotic algae. They are free living creatures and also known as Cyanobacteria. It fixes the atmospheric nitrogen in moist soils. So BGA has been recommended as a biofertilizer. The algae includes unicellular as well as filamentous species. Some of the filamentous forms have specialized cells known as
Blue green algae, Azolla ŠIncrease the availability of nitrogen and phosphorus and certain micronutrients. ŠModerate the soil pH conditions. ŠAzolla being green manure can substitute 40 -50 kg N per hectare. ŠAzolla is source of nutrients to poultry, fish and water animals. 36 BINM: Introduction
The biofertilizers, which are low cost inputs, renewable and pollution free have a crucial role in augmenting nutrient supply to crops by increasing their availability through exploitation of natural processes like biological nitrogen fixation, solubilization of insoluble P and decomposition of organic wastes etc. Blue Green Algae (BGA) find a highly favourable abode in the waterlogged

It consists of remaining residual solids after draining bioliquid. Excess sludge can perhaps serve as a fertilizers additive due
In addition to being used as a nutritional supplement, algal biofertilizers also bring other benefits such as biocontrolling plant pathogens, reducing the use of chemicals and slumping greenhouse gas emissions. However, the success of algae fertilizer depends largely on the economic feasibility of biomass production.
Bio-fertilizer are mostly cultured and multiplied it the laboratory. However, blue green algae and azolla can be mass-multiplied in the field. Characteristics Features of common Biofertilizers Rhizobium : Rhizobium is relatively more effective and widely used biofertilizer. Rhizobium, in association wit legumes, fixes atmospheric N.

Blue green algae as biofertilizers BGA fix atmospherical nitrogen either as free-living or in symbiotic associations with partners such as water fern Azolla, cycads etc. and a list of different form of nitrogen fixing blue green algae has been presented in Table 1. Some cyanobacterial members are endowed
